Job Description for Packaging Leader 

  
Main Purpose 
Ø   Ensuring that the material produced in the process area is packed as per the Frito Lay standards of packing parameters and quality 
Ø   Ensuring compliance with the production and dispatch plans by minimizing breakdowns and wastages in the packing section 
Ø   Ensuring proper maintenance and smooth functioning of the entire packaging area 
  
Accountabilities – 
1. Supervising the packing of product to meet the daily and weekly targets in terms of quality, quantity & AVC: Ø   Coordinating with RM/ PM Stores for obtaining packing material 
-    Packing film according to the SKU to be packed 
-    Cartons and carton ink, BOPP Tapes, Stickers, Printing ink 
Ø   Coordinating with Engg Stores to make auxiliary parts for machines available. 
-    Raising indents for the required material (with proper description of the part needed) 
-    Following up with the engineering stores to get the material 
-    Approving the materials bought by stores within a specified time limit 
-    Providing information to the stores on the consumption pattern of particular spare parts. 
  
2. Ensuring maximum efficiency of the packing machines in consultation with the Packing Engineer to minimize breakdowns and downtime: Ø   Maintaining a log of all the machine related problems that occur in a particular shift and the corrective action taken for the problems 
Ø   Maintaining a log of all the machine related problems that need to be rectified. 
  
3. Leading and managing a motivated team of packing operators for ensuring harmony and good work environment in the packing section: Ø   Deploying operators on specific workstations according to their capability 
Ø   Coordination with HR and Engg. Departments for improving operators’ machine competencies in order to minimize operator related wastage and maximize OEE the TPM way. 
  
4. Supervising the packing machines closely to minimize machine related wastage and meet all quality standards: Ø   Conducting regular checks of machines before start-up of every shift like temperature check, vibration of machines etc. 
Ø   Monitoring the machines to avoid underflow or overflow on the Allan Conveyors 
Ø   Conveying the incidence of overflow and underflow immediately to the production operators 
Ø   Ensuring that the machines do not run out of packing film rolls at any point of time. 
  
5. Ensuring regular and timely clearing of hold material: Ø   Obtaining results of 100% inspection by quality control on the hold material by the end of each shift 
Ø   Transferring any reject material to the stores for disposal 
Ø   Transferring the approved material to the dispatch section 
  6. Housekeeping and maintenance of the packing section according to hygiene standards: Ø   Ensuring that the material in the packing section is placed systematically according to a layout 
Ø   Ensuring that the operators observe all GMPs like wearing hair and beard net, wearing gloves while handling product etc. 
Ø   Ensuring that the waste film and rejected product is transferred to the stores section immediately 
Ø   Inculcating hygiene consciousness in the packing team 
  7. Assisting the engineering department in projects like installation of new machines: Ø   Providing consultation to the engineering department about expectations from the new machine, points to look out for while installing.   8. Participating in various task force activities to contribute towards small and continuous improvements in the plant: Ø   Analyzing collectively the problem taken up by the group. 
Ø   Designing solutions/ suggestions to the specific projects/ problems taken up by the SGAs / task force. 
Ø   Getting the solutions approved by the Plant Head/ Manufacturing Manager. 
  
9. Central Packaging Resource: He is subject matter expert . He will provide technical and problem solving to other plant also. 
Ø   Provide technical support in case of installation of new packaging machines across the plants and in 3 rd party operations. 
Ø   Trouble shooting and   complex repair jobs of packaging machines across the manufacturing location 
Ø   Replication of best packaging practices across the 3 manufacturing locations and 3P operations. 
Ø   Prepare training module for all types of packaging machines and coordinate with plant specific packaging resource for imparting the training to operatives so as to make them process competent.

10. Coaching the packing operators for efficient handling of packing machines and enabling their multi skilling: Ø   Documenting the standard checks to be done regularly by operators to ensure efficient functioning of the machines 
Ø   Making the operators available for training on using the machines in accordance with the SOPs institutionalized by the Engg and the Production Managers 
Ø   Supporting the production manger in ensuring training plan compliance of employees. 
  
11. Implementation of change initiatives and supporting continuous improvement in department: 
Ø   Supporting the manager in benchmarking latest trends in production and packaging systems in the industry 
Ø   Giving feedback to manager on change initiatives and improvement plans that have been planned for the department and organization 
Ø   Executing improvement plans as per plans. 
  
  
12. Maintaining discipline at shop floor and handle grievances at their own level before they become a common cause 
Job Dimensions – what is the scope of the role – volume, net revenue, budget, geography, number of customers, number of sites etc for THIS role?
Ø   Volume: Approx 40 tons of PC+ KK production per shift 
Ø   Budget: Packing material consumables, film consumption, EGA & machine spares within AOP 
Ø   Geography: One complete shift in packaging section 
Ø   No of customers: Approx 25 in each shift 
Ø   No of sites: One plant (50 packaging tubes of 7 production lines)

-    Suppliers and Vendors for engineering and Capex items 
-    External and Internal auditors 
-    Statutory Auditor, Internal Auditors, Corporate auditors etc.

Qualifications/Experience:


Key Skills/Experience Required – 
specific education/certification, specific functional experience, language etc NEEDED for the job.   Please note that this is not necessarily the incumbent’s personal background. 

Ø   Education: B. E ( Instrumentation/Mechanical/Electrical
Ø   Desirable: Diploma/ degree in packaging technology 
Ø   Functional Experience: Approx 4 -7 years of experience 
Ø   Language: English, Hindi, Marathi 

Experience: 

§   Minimum experience of 3-4 years of working in a similar industry at the executive level 
§   Experience of handling packaging of perishable products 
§   Experience of handling automated packaging machines 
§   Exposure to manufacturing systems and shop floor culture
